Next Stop: Utopia

by JR Watkins

Underlying the current social condition of our planet, we must ultimately ask ourselves “what is our global objective, what is Man’s destiny?’ and if it is Utopia we strive for, what does Utopia look like and how do we get there?

Surely every culture or country would have a different answer, which may be part of the problem.

In America, Utopia might be described as a socialist dream, where every person is fed, clothed and comforted by the communal contribution of all; a Utopia based on making sure every need is met.

Utopia might also mean a place where there is little or no government over control, that people can live in peace, free of crime, free of the fear of war, self-determination.

Still, in places like Iran or China, Utopia looks completely different, shaped by whatever worldview they have as being ideal.

Culture, it seems, determines our vision of the future and a perfection of that culture as the end game.

What we all have in common, however, when we envision that future human age of bliss is the common belief that peace and goodwill is the essential ingredient of that perfect order, which means no more war and no more bad actors (despotic rulers) because we will have evolved pass these tendencies to control, subvert, kill, and destroy for selfish reasons.

I would, as a matter of conjecture, present one view of what this utopia might look like, and certain steps that have to occur in order for us to get there:

The Urantia Book tells us what we are working towards:

During this era the problems of disease and delinquency are virtually solved. Degeneracy has already been largely eliminated by selective and intelligent reproduction. Disease has been practically mastered by the intelligent and world-wide application of the discoveries of the physical sciences of preceding ages. The average length of life, during this period, climbs well above the equivalent of three hundred years..

Throughout this epoch there is a gradual lessening of governmental supervision. True self-government is beginning to function; fewer and fewer restrictive laws are necessary. The military branches of national resistance are passing away; the era of international harmony is really arriving. There are many nations, mostly determined by land distribution, but only one race, one language, and one religion. Mortal affairs are almost, but not quite, utopian. This truly is a great and glorious age!

The UB also gives us the five prerequisites that are necessary in order to achieve ‘utopia,’ a true spiritual age:

1. Social fraternity. Multiplication of international and interracial social contacts and fraternal associations through travel, commerce, and competitive play. Development of a common language and the multiplication of multilinguists. The racial and national interchange of students, teachers, industrialists, and religious philosophers.

2. Intellectual cross-fertilization. Brotherhood is impossible on a world whose inhabitants are so primitive that they fail to recognize the folly of unmitigated selfishness. There must occur an exchange of national and racial literature. Each race must become familiar with the thought of all races; each nation must know the feelings of all nations. Ignorance breeds suspicion, and suspicion is incompatible with the essential attitude of sympathy and love.

3. Ethical awakening. Only ethical consciousness can unmask the immorality of human intolerance and the sinfulness of fratricidal strife. Only a moral conscience can condemn the evils of national envy and racial jealousy. Only moral beings will ever seek for that spiritual insight which is essential to living the golden rule.

4. Political wisdom. Emotional maturity is essential to self-control. Only emotional maturity will insure the substitution of international techniques of civilized adjudication for the barbarous arbitrament of war. Wise statesmen will sometime work for the welfare of humanity even while they strive to promote the interest of their national or racial groups. Selfish political sagacity is ultimately suicidal—destructive of all those enduring qualities which insure planetary group survival.

5. Spiritual insight. The brotherhood of man is, after all, predicated on the recognition of the fatherhood of God. The quickest way to realize the brotherhood of man is to effect the spiritual transformation of present-day humanity. The only technique for accelerating the natural trend of social evolution is that of applying spiritual pressure from above, thus augmenting moral insight while enhancing the soul capacity of every mortal to understand and love every other mortal. Mutual understanding and fraternal love are transcendent civilizers and mighty factors in the world-wide realization of the brotherhood of man.

If there is consensus that mankind is working towards some form of universal balance, or global peace and prosperity, if we assume that all of this (our existence) is not in vain, then the good news is we may be far closer to ‘utopia’ than we realize, thanks in large part to technology that is bringing people and cultures together, a new paradigm that did not exist 40 years ago. And despite the fact that many governments of the world have a propensity to screw things up, the PEOPLE seem to be on track.

I guess you can say I am hopeful for mankind, despite the crap that comes out of the TV screen every day.

I believe God has great plans for us, which is something you don’t hear that often anymore.
