Science, Faith and the Future

by James R. Watkins

Where did I come from?

What is my purpose?

What is my future?

These are the fundamental questions of existence.

Science attempts to explain the first question through the Laws of Physics, but stops short on motive (or purpose), while religion seeks to address the latter two questions regarding purpose and destiny.  The Urantia Book seeks to present a conceptual reality in which Science and Faith co-exist, thereby answering the three fundamental questions about human existence.

In attempting to harmonize faith and science it becomes clear the mission of the Urantia Book may also serve to prepare us for a future visitation from a Divine Son.

Let me explain.

As the Urantia Book points out, every epochal revelation (perhaps with the exception of Caligastia) was also preceded by a time of preparation: For example, Van (as in Lake Van) had prepared the garden for Adam and Eve a hundred or so years prior to their arrival. They knew the Material Sons where coming and prepared for it. Machiventa Melchizedek prepared the way for the Bestowal Son (Jesus) through Abraham and the subsequent prophets of the Hebrew religion, generations of men and women who continued to prophecy the Deliverer would come. Always was there preparation before the next appearance of a divine Son.

If the Urantia Book is paving the way, or “preparing the soil,” and the authors wanted us to know these visitations do occur and will continue to do so, such a purpose warrants discussion amongst our community as to what, if anything, we should be doing to prepare for a future appearance of Jesus, Machiventa, Adam, or whoever else might come to usher in the next epochal stage of humanity, what the Revelators refer to as The Post-Bestowal Age.

If a Machiventa or Jesus showed up today, would mankind even have the spiritual or intellectual ability to know who these personages were? Based on what I see, I would estimate less than 10% of the world’s population would be able to handle a Divine Son.

Detailed in Paper 52, we learn that we have to be ready, a divine visit might not actually take place until we are mature enough spiritually to deal with such a stupendous event, which leads this author to conclude the Urantia Book is a first step towards that eventual day when we will see, through spiritual eyes, a Divine Son making his return.
